Don’t ever forget that the working conditions for people in the mainly third world countries that supply the mainstream markets would be illegal if it were in our country. We have the luxury of health and safety, minimum wage, and all the other responsibilities that an employer has for their employees. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for cheaper prices for clothes, and any consumer goods for that matter. But do we really want to contribute to the misery and desperation of the people who make these things? Do we really want to contribute to the profits of the criminals that exploit child labour and treat people like crap? Do you? Route to Ethical SuccessThe route to success and to an ultimately greener world is not to force overnight change, but to allow that change to evolve. If you really can’t afford a completely ethically produced outfit for that next party, then start with just the shirt, or the socks, the little things add up in the end. If you’re going to wear a designer label, wear one that reflects something important, like protecting our planet, not one that just plays on sporting achievement. Fred Perry may have been great tennis player, but is tennis really more important than making a better world for our children to inherit? Making an effortAs long as you are making the effort to change, you are one of the good guys. Carry on like this and you’ll be surprised how quickly you develop an ethically sound wardrobe. In the old days, the only ethical clothing available was “home made”, exclusive to hippies. These guys were routinely insulted in the streets, and for no other reason than caring. Now it’s time for us to see these people as pioneers, they paved the way for the green generation, now it’s our turn. I don’t mean that everyone should become a hippy, we just need to adopt their values, and with the help of such ethical brands such as Adili, Howies, and Ascension, we can do it with style.
